Up Up and away

The vacation break is here - took my family on the Singapore Flyer yesterday 4 Sep 08. This week was a promotion period for teachers, so I get to travel free. Paid about $70 for 2 other adults and 2 children. Inside the cabin were benches which could sit about about 20 people. There were about 11 people in our cabin. As the cabin moved up higher, it was a wonderful sight to behold. At the apex, 165m above sea level, we had a panaromic view of the city landscape as well as the surrounding Marina bay leading into the sea. The floating platform where the NDP was held, the Esplanade, the stands for the upcoming F1 night race, the construction work of the IR, buildings, highways, ships, islands, ... could all be seen from inside the capsule as it revolves slowly, making a complete revolution in about 30 minutes. The children were naturally excited, flipping out their mobiles to take pictures of the wonderful sight. Towards the end of our journey, we had a glimpse of the completed IR through a constructed model, which they say can only be seen through taking the Flyer.
We thank God that the weather was fine; it didn't rain neither was it too hot. After the trip, we made our way for dinner at Marine Parade. The children stayed over at my mom's place for the night.

High School Musical ON ICE

Yoo hoo! Came at last! The moment that I had been waiting for had arrived. It was that cold, rainy day...

Groaning, I followed my parents to the food court that was packed with people. The floor seemed wet and dirty, like that in the wet market. There was also a cigeratte lying on the floor. "Urggghhhh!" I HATE dirty! Tiptoe-ing across the wet floor, we finally found an empty table. We ordered the food of our choice, and settled down to eat. The food did not agree with my expectations and I found that the food found at the food court that my family usually dined at, was much, much better. After that, to my delight, we bought a refreshing drink, a strawberry sort-of milkshake "thing". It was good for quenching my thirst. Finally, we headed for the auditorium where the "high school musical on ice" was held. I was so excited that every step I took, I seemed to bounce right off the ground. I was sooooo excited!!!! During the show, I kept taking photos! I wanted to have a memory of what had happened. During the break in the middle of the show, I spotted a very extra beautiful cup. After much pleading we bought it. After the whole show, my parents brought back 2 sleepy children back home. This was an unforgettable day......

Nature Walk

Took the family on a nature ramble yesterday starting from Forest Walk crossing Henderson Wave all the way to Faber Point. Ernie came along as well to enjoy both flora and fauna. We took pictures of some interesting sightings. For fauna, there was a rather unusual 'spiky' caterpillar crawling along a railing at the end of Forest Walk. I wonder what butterfly it would be? We also saw a squirrel jumping from branch to branch but weren't able to take any pictures of it.

As for flora, we saw a pitcher plant almost drying up. The plant attract insects by secreting nectar. Once an insect is inside, it is prevented from escaping by the downward pointing hairs lining its inside. The insect would be consumed at the base of the plant by digestive juices. It was an educational tour as well for the children.
Half way through the walk the children's stomach began to grumble. When we reached Faber Point, we bought a packet of pop corns and a tube of potato chips to munch while we headed back to take a bus to get to our car. We headed to Vivo City for lunch and did some window shopping.
The children returned home to ice-cream and a movie on MIO TV. Later in the evening we went to Simpan Bedok for dinner and bought some donuts from Donut Master for tomorrow's breakfast. A combo pack of 6 costs &7.50 - these are your designer kind of donuts. They were yummy!

Trip 2 Malaysia

Its the first week of da hols n mum, Sheryl n I went on a one day trip 2 Malaysia with our friends! I wished dat dad would come 2 but he had his work 2 do. I have never gone on a ONE DAY trip 2 Malaysia before. You can't do a lot of things in one day in Malaysia as u need time 2 travel back n forth from Malaysia 2 Singapore. We decided 2 make the most of dat very little time.
We managed 2 do lots of activities dat day, so, it seemed more like 2 days in Malaysia than 1. First, we had breakfast. Then, we went 2 Giant 2 shop. Mum bought a pair of new shoes 4 dad. After that, we went bowling. Sheryl, Carlene n I did not play. I did not play as I could not carry da ball with 1 hand.
At about 11:30, we played some games @ da arcade. We watched a movie after dat.(Sorry, Sheryl leaning on me, can't type properly) Back 2 da subject. We ate lunch then shopped again. + shop 4 Sheryl's bag. After eating dinner, we shop-AGAIN. Then, we went 2 watch another movie. When we went toilet, Jael saw a few boys taking picture outside da girls toilet. After that, we went home n reach home @ 1a.m.+
THE END=)

Holidays are here!

Children and mom went on a trip with church friends to JB yesterday. They had a great time shopping and watched two movies: Indiana Jones and the kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and Chronicles of Narnia, Prince Caspian. Tickets cost RM$9 and RM$6 for an adult and a child respectively. Mom bought slippers for Sherm and me, and a bag for Sheryl. They returned slightly past midnight.

I went on a learning journey with my department to Republic Polytechnic, finding out more about their Problem-Based Learning approach to T & L. It was an eye opener seeing how lessons were conducted in three different sessions all within a day. The first session was exploratory in nature, getting to know and understand the problem. The session session probed deeper into the problem with worksheets to guide students in their thought processes. For the third session, each group had to present their findings using powerpoint.

We can certainly see the benefits of this approach to learning. Students were picking up many important life skills such as communication and research skills, which would stand them in good stead for the future.
